SAMPLE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - PROP 11

Please help get the word out about why voters should support Redistricting Reform and Proposition 11.

Note: Please adapt these letters to your own community and check your local paper's word limit for published letters.

Editor:

If voters are tired of nothing getting done in Sacramento, they should support Proposition 11 in November.

The current budget impasse is yet another reason why voters should approve Prop. 11 in November. Prop. 11 will change the current redistricting system, which allows legislators to draw their own district lines to guarantee their reelection. The result is that our state lawmakers are unaccountable to voters and their needs — which is why we can't get a state budget passed, or health care reform, proper education funding, you name it.

Prop. 11 will let an independent citizens commission draw fair district lines so we can hold politicians accountable and vote them out if they don't do their job.

Vote YES on Proposition 11.

Sincerely,

your name

Editor:

Legislators drawing their own district boundaries is a major conflict of interest that contributes to partisan gridlock and prevents voters from holding lawmakers accountable. California needs a system that removes that conflict while encouraging citizen participation and community input. Proposition 11, the California Voters FIRST Act, does that.

District lines have long been drawn in backroom deals at the Capitol. Prop. 11 creates an open, transparent redistricting process with an independent citizens commission that includes Democrats, Republicans and members not associated with either party. The commission will represent our state’s diversity and protect minority representation.

Join a broad, diverse coalition of good government organizations that knows this initiative is our best chance to bring true redistricting reform to California. Vote YES on Proposition 11.

Sincerely,

your name
